The Truth About Wedding Dress Alterations: What Every Bride Should Know.
Finding your dream dress is an unforgettable moment, but the journey doesn’t end there. Almost every wedding dress will need some level of alteration to achieve that perfect fit—it’s a normal and expected part of the process. At Felicity Rose, we want our brides to feel informed, confident, and prepared when it comes to alterations. So, here’s everything you need to know about what to expect, how to budget, and how to make the most of your fittings.
Why Do Wedding Dresses Need Alterations?
Wedding dresses are not made to your exact measurements; they are ordered in the closest standard size based on your largest measurement. We need your dress to fit you at your widest point and then we bespoke the rest of the gown to fit your body. This means alterations are needed to ensure the dress fits your unique body beautifully and comfortably. (This is also why we say to ignore the number inside your dress)
Common reasons for alterations include: Adjusting the length (most people do need this) so your dress skims the floor perfectly.
Taking in or letting out the bodice for a snug, flattering fit.
Shortening straps or adjusting sleeves.
Adding support (such as cups or boning) for better structure.
Creating a bustle so you can move freely at your reception.
Even if your dress seems to fit well off the rack, professional tailoring ensures it looks and feels just right on your wedding day.
How Long Do Alterations Take?
At Felicity Rose, we recommend starting your alterations around 8-12 weeks before your wedding. This allows enough time for multiple fittings if needed. Some brides need just one or two tweaks, while others may require more extensive work.
A typical timeline might look like this ~
First fitting (8-10weeks before): The seamstress will assess what adjustments are required and pin where needed. She will give her professional recommendations and you should be honest in your hopes and expectations also. You should bring your wedding shoes and any undergarments you plan to wear.
Second fitting (around 4 weeks before): This is where you’ll start seeing your final look take shape, if all the work is complete at this stage you are ready to take your dress away.
Equally these timing leave enough room if any Fine-tuning adjustments are needed.
Need alterations in a shorter time frame? While rush services are an option subject to availability it’s always best to plan ahead.
How Much Do Wedding Dress Alterations Cost?
Alteration costs vary depending on the complexity of the work required. Simple adjustments, like hemming your gown, can start at around £155, while more intricate work—such as reshaping the bodice, adding sleeves, or extensive beading—can cost £600 or more, especially for bespoke customisations.
At Felicity Rose, our alterations are carried out in house, and all alterations must be paid in full before any work begins at your first fitting. We always recommend budgeting for alterations when planning your dress purchase to avoid surprises later.
Customisations: Making Your Dress Uniquely Yours.
Beyond standard alterations, you may want to personalize your dress with custom changes. Some brides choose to add sleeves, change necklines, or even combine elements from different dresses to create something one-of-a-kind. Customisations require extra time and expertise, so be sure to discuss them early in the process.
